WHAT IS COACHING?
Coaching is a term used to describe multiple different roles. Most people visualize the coach of a sports team whose role is to teach, encourage, and motivate their players. Then there are other coaches that may refer to themselves as a life coach, wellness coach, or development coach. This kind of coaching among others is what the International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential." Trauma-Informed Coaching applies a scientific understanding of how trauma presents itself in the mind and body so that we can help people build resilience and move forward.
While coaching can be considered a mental health service comparable to counselling, psychotherapy, and psychiatry; it is important to understand the role of coaching in relation to the other mental health services. Coaches do not prescribe medication, diagnose mental illnesses, or provide psychotherapy; nor are they a replacement for those who depend on these treatments. However, the use of coaching as a means to promote general well-being, personal growth, and professional development is becoming increasingly present in schools and the workplace.
